Activities

The Sea Observatory of the Azores (OMA) is a technical, scientific and cultural nonprofit association, established in 2002 (www.oma.pt).

Since 2004, OMA established its headquarters in the Porto Pim Old Whaling Station, Horta, on loan, through agreement with the Regional Government. OMA has status of Institution Equivalent to Non-governmental Organization for the Environment (NGOE), certified by the Portuguese Environment Agency. In March of 2010 was considered by the Government of the Azores as a Public Utility Institution.

Like other regional observatories, OMA was part of the first network of the Azores Scientific Observatories (ROCA), established under a Government Programme. Currently, is part of the Regional Network of Science Centers, promoted by the Regional Secretariat of the Sea, Science and Technology (SRMCT), which includes the other observatories and similar institutions, which have complementary sectoral objectives within the framework of promoting science and technology.

OMA aims to disseminate scientific and technological culture and to promote interpretation and environmental education activities in the context of Marine Sciences. To achieve its mission, as Science Center, OMA works with the Azorean society, promoting inclusion in the global society of information and knowledge.

Intends to provide the teaching of scientific and technological content, in an interactive, fun and motivating way, in its area of activity. On the other hand, also intends to observe the State of the Azores Sea and promote environmentally sustainable practices, that preserve resources, biodiversity and the natural functioning of marine ecosystems.

Inherent to the fact that its headquarters is in the Porto Pim Old Whaling Station, OMA also aims to safeguard, study and disseminate the whaling heritage of Faial and of the Azores.
