Activities

Indian Ocean Coastal Regeneration Initiative (IOCRI)

Objective
To address the converging crises of climate change (deforestation and biodiversity loss) that threaten the Earth’s capacity to recover and regenerate, and that severely impact the well-being and livelihoods of communities.
Geographic Focus

Centered in one of the world’s most biodiverse areas, surrounded by fragile ecosystems in the Indian Ocean region (India, Pakistan (Asia), Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Tanzania (Africa)).

Implementation Methodology

A transformative, science-based, community-led approach focused on nature-based solutions.

Initiative Premise

The principle that addressing climate change and ensuring environmental sustainability requires community engagement and improving overall quality of life

Healthy Environments

  • Restoration and protection of mangroves, including vegetation monitoring and water dynamics
  • Regenerative and organic coastal agriculture
  • Development of community assets to support environmental protection (e.g., clean boats and nets)
  • Clean energy alternatives to charcoal (e.g., biogas and solar stoves)
  • Tree planting, including the establishment of new nurseries
  • Sustainable water resources, including reducing coastal salinity
  • Conservation of coastal forests and seagrass meadows
  • Biodiversity measures and climate change adaptation
  • Improvement of dietary patterns
  • Carbon sequestration tracking and potential links to Nationally Determined Contributions and carbon finance.
Strong Communities
  • Community mobilization and institution building (e.g., beach management units, addressing local pollution, beach and river cleanups)
  • Microfinance and women’s savings groups
  • Strong partnerships with local governments through civic structures
  • Microenterprise and skills training for meaningful employment and self-employment
  • Integrated farming systems, including beekeeping, livestock and poultry, and support for value chains in harvesting, processing, and marketing
  • Fishing, aquaculture, seaweed cultivation, and other sustainable economic opportunities
  • Food and nutrition security
  • Gender equality and social inclusion
  • Early childhood development and climate education – pedagogy and resources
  • Increased knowledge and capacity of practitioners and policymakers on coastal regeneration.
